Week Twelve Thought Question

Thank you for your posts regarding plagiarism--what it is and how to avoid it. These are important things to know when you begin incorporating sources into your papers. Remember to use signal phrases and parenthetical citations when using quotes, paraphrases, or summaries.

For this particular blog, please discuss the space that you are analyzing. Describe it and discuss your thesis. What is the deeper significance or meaning that you hope to discover regarding your space? Use David Guterson's article about the Mall of America to help you.

Thanks!

The space that I chose to analyze was the Dentist office. Many people have an anxiety rush as soon as they step foot into the Dentist’s office. I discussed the how the space has a negative feeling and can cause people to not seek health care just based on the sight, sounds, and smells of the environment. The Dentist’s office is meant to be a positive experience and many clinics are trying hard to change the look and feel of their buildings to help make their patients feel more at ease while coming for a routine visit. In my paper I discussed how the dentist office can be a negative space for some people; when in reality it has a positive outcome with your smile.

The space that I analyzed was the gym from my high school. I chose to do this space because it was a very important space in my life. Not only did I have my basketball and volleyball games in there for four years, but also my dad is the head basketball coach there and many days I went a watched his practice. The significance for me in my space is how I have changed throughout the years and how the gym has helped me. I talk about how my attitude has changed with much practice. Also I talk about how the gym is like a sanctuary for me. I chose these words because the gym is my place to get away from the outside world. By writing this paper it helped me see how much the gym really does mean to me. And also, how many hours of my life I have spent there, it really was my second home.

I analyzed my high school gym with the volleyball court all set up. The gym is supposed to be a place that draws you in to have fun and be competitive. The way that the things in the gym are placed is always interesting to think about. The way that the lights glisten on the floor and the unique look of the state banners hanging from the ceiling makes a person want to end the gym and check out the rest of the place. Friends and family gather to cheer in the team to a victory and are always seated in the same places. This space is actually a space were you can go onto the court and be yourself and have a good time. Even though you may have couches yelling and screaming at you, you always know that you can make your own judgment and be the true person that you are.

The space that i analyzed was Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. It is the home of the Iowa Hawkeye football team. The stadium is filled with history. It is said, to be one of the toughest places to play in college football. There are always thousands of people tailgaiting hours before the game. The games are always a sellout! Kinnick Stadium is named after the only Heisman trophy winner in the history at Iowa. In my paper I discussed inside the stadium, the fans, the field, and the history behind it all. There is no negative experience about the stadium, if you love football. Iowa has the greatest fans in the country.

For my analyzing spaces project, I am writing about a winery in Cambridge, Ia. My thesis is that all the structural, functional, and environmental designs are created in a specific way to make you feel like you are one with nature in a Tuscany sort of way. The winery is a beautiful space, with very natural color and plenty of wood architecture. It's original purpose was a place to make and sell wine. However, this tuscany feel makes the winery a prime candidate for many social receptions. People want to feel as if they are in a safe, quite, tuscany place and thus want to incorperate it into their wedding receptions, family reuinions, and other gatherings.

The space I chose to analyze was my home. My thesis described how I would use sights, sounds, smells, and my idea of home to analyze my space. The deep significance of my home was that it is more than just a building. It is a combination of the area and surroundings, and the secure feeling while there. This space has shaped my life in a very positive way. I felt that this analysis was more difficult than expected.

I choose to analyze the great outdoors. Many people go camping and so does my family every minute we get we make plans to go. My family and I drive all the way up to Minnesota where we stay for a week at a time in the summer and sometimes in the winter if it is nice enough. This was always a positive experience for me because I got to see how the Earth has changed and never looks the same year after year. Camping can also be a bad experience for some such as if you are allergic to smoke the campfire can get in the way and also people do stupid stuff around the campfire. Writing this paper also showed me how close I really am to my family no matter how much we argue. We don’t like spending time when you think about it, but at the same time it doesn’t bother us. A place to get away from work, stress, and a feeling of having to do something around the house, such as cleaning and laundry; a place to get away from it all is how I refer to it. The outdoors is really a safe environment since you have the clean air and the feeling of a stress free environment where any outdoor activity is open and right at your fingertips, you are never bored.

I have chosen to write about my parent's house. Although we have mixed schedules, my family is very close. Things have not always been that way and home was not an enjoyable place. But we have grown and changed and our home is now a comfort zone and fun place to be. not only is it built so that you can hear and smell eveything that goes on in the house, but our doors are always open and we have inevsted in some nicer appliances that make it enjoyable for the family to be around.

The space that I'm analyzing is the Jordan Creek Town Center. This mall could be a home away from home with it's use of entertainment, variety of stores, and food selection. In every home there is a kitchen, dining room, living room, and entertainment/TV room. This mall has restaurants which resemble a kitchen, a food court that is similar to a dining room, a lounge area which is like a living room, and a Movie Theatre that appears as an entertainment area. The mall has cathedral elements with its use of statues, high ceilings, and stained glass.

I haven't written my paper yet. But the space i'm analyzing is my new bedroom. I have never had a room to call my own since i was born. This summer we moved to a bigger apartment and i was able to claim a bedroom. I will be comparing my new bedroom to the rest of the rooms I had to share with my younger sisters. I feel that having my own bedroom is symbolic of the change and growth I have attained since i moved to Ames. I got my new room this summer, right after my eighteenth birthday and right before I began college as a freshman. Some people may call that coincidence, but I believe that it was meant to be.
My thesis basically centers around the fact that my room represents my growth and independence.

I have chosen to analyze the Ledges State Park. I decided on this park because there
are so many different areas of the park, such as the campground, the hiking trails, the creeks, the natural habitat and wildlife. It provides a wonderful recreational area for people of all ages to enjoy. The Ledges also has a deep history that allows for its roots to be deep in Boone County history. I will be discussing the different scenic areas, the various recreational activities that can be enjoyed, and the vast history of this wonderful park. Steve
