Week Eleven Thought Question

Last week, we began discussing documentation. We will continue to practice with quotes, paraphrases, and summaries.

In this space, please discuss why you think plagiarism is such a problem these days? Why wasn't it as prevalent a few years ago? How can you avoid plagiarism? Why it is so important to avoid plagiarism? Please discuss why you would personally never try to use other people's ideas as your own.

Thanks! I'm anxious to read your replies!

I think plagiarism might be more prevalent because access to outside sources of information has become so readily available. Such as the internet and even cell phones. People have learned to rely on these things for information and have stopped trying to do any research. Avoiding plagiarism is fairly easy to do, just make sure to cite whatever you might take from someone else. Using other people's ideas would not be something I would enjoy doing. Taking someone else's writing and claiming it's your own is basically stealing and I would never do that.

Plagiarism is a growing problem. More and more people are attending college every year, increasing the number of writers out there. Computer access is continually getting easier as well, creating many opportunities due to the large number of resources on the web. To avoid plagiarism you need to learn how to properly cite your sources and give credit where credit is due. Plagiarism can lead to being kicked out of school, this is why it is important to avoid. I try to avoid using other's ideas because I am not the best at citing sources.

I think that plagiarism is such a problem today because people are getting lazy and don’t want to think about things themselves. I wasn’t such a problem a few years ago because the people didn’t think that it was that big of a deal. I also think that people were more apt to do things themselves and not just surf the internet and get it. To avoid plagiarism a person could put quotes around the work if they are unsure if they can put it in their own words. It is important to avoid plagiarism because you can get kicked out of school for trying to play it off as your own words. I would not try and use other people’s ideas because you can always generate your own ideas on the same thing without it being swayed by other people’s thoughts too. It is considered stealing and you should never steal anything!!

I think that the main reason plagiarism is such a problem is because students do not get educated enough or do not pay attention when they are getting educated on how not to plagiarize. I think it wasn’t as prevalent a few years ago because the internet was not as big as it is now. Anything you want to write about is on the internet and is easy to find. The easiest way to avoid plagiarism is to be educated and know how to cite the ideas that you find. Because you don’t have all the knowledge you will need for many papers you have to use other peoples ideas and be able to document their ideas correctly. The main reason it is important to avoid plagiarism is because you can get into a lot of trouble as much as get kicked out of school. I don’t use other people’s ideas because its their ideas and you are trying to take credit for something you didn’t do. And if you need to use their idea it is easy to document it correctly.

Plagiarism is a such a big problem because of the increased access to the internet. Anyone can have access to endless source of information at the click of the mouse. This puts a lot of pressure on the person using the computer source to cite information, because 'with great power comes great responsibility', the person is responsible for citing the real source or giving credit where it is due. I would personally never plagiarize because I don't believe in taking credit for other people's work. At the same time, I am sure that I have plagiarized before unknowingly because I didn't know how to correctly cite the source of my information. Thanks to the class, I can practice citing correctly .

I believe plagarism is more prevelent now, because there is so much more technology that makes outside sources more attainable. It's quick and easy and very little work to plagarize. Back in the day, you had to go to the library, find the book, find the article from the book and then write it out. When you had to do all that already, why cheat. Now, you find a database or website, type a key word and it's there. There is so much less work involved. It is important to avoid plagarism, because people worked hard to write their article and/or book and if you plagarize you take that work away from the author and claim it as your own. You didn't work hard enough to have the right to take that away.

I think plagiarism is becoming more of an issue recently is because there is so much outside information you can easily use. Access to the internet is the main issue. I think it was a problem a few years ago but teachers didn't look for it as much as they do today. It is important to avoid plagiarism to gain respect as a student. No one will respect you if you can't write your own paper. I personally think that if you can't take the time to put something in your own words you shouldn't write it.

Since everybody has access to the internet it is very easy to plagiarize. It's very tempting to do it and easy. I think the main reason plagiarize is that they really don't know how to do whatever they have to do. I think teachers should take the time to explain, how to properly do your sources, how to proofread, and write your paper. Plagiarism can get you into big trouble with the school, failing the class, or getting kicked out. Plagiarism is wrong because, you are stealing, and that is breaking the law!

With all the computers and internet access that we have today, virus a few years ago makes it very easy to comment plagiarism. There again, we have to be very careful on how we get the resources, how we state the resource. As Sara pointed out one of her students used just two words and was accused of plagiarism. So to prevent that it’s best to site where the source came from. It’s always best to give credit where credit is doing. Steve

Wehn you write, it is a chance to express your personal opinions and thoughts. If you are always using other people's ideas then you are not allowing yourself to express your feelings. Plagiarism is problem for people of all ages becuase it is an "easy way out". You don't have to put much effort into what you are doing and therefor can get it done quicker. But what most people do not realize is that it is a serious offense because that is someone elses hard work.
