Week Ten Thought Question

This week we will be discussing how to analyze spaces. We will talk about this idea further in class.

Think of a space that might be particularly interesting to analyze. Describe it. Describe who uses this space. How does the design of the room affect the way it is used? Does it affect the way it is used? Does the space shape the people or do the people shape the space?

Do not duplicate other people's answers. Explain your answers fully. We will discuss these in class.

Thanks!

A space that sticks out in my mind would be the living room of my house. This space is a place where I feel like I can be myself. My living room has a couch, loveseat, two recliners, end tables, and a big screen big. This space is set up looking out French doors that leads to outside. I think since we are able to look outside while sitting in there makes it feel like you are able to do whatever you want. This space is where my family and I gather to spend time together whether it is watching TV, watching a movie, or even just sitting there talking to each other. I think that this space shapes my family because it seems like whenever my family is sitting in there we become carrying of everyone’s needs. This space is the place where everyone talks about their problems and listens to try and help the others

You could hear a penny drop in the halls of the DMACC Campus while class is in session. When students begin to get out of class you can tell by the looks on theirs faces how they feel about the class they just attended. Students then walk in groups and talk about the classes or their week activities. It’s amusing how without direction, students walk on certain sides of the hallway like cars drive on road. Randomly students and staff walk out of their classrooms to answer that phone call that just couldn’t wait, use the restroom, or get a quick drink of water, but then return quickly to the classroom. For the most part the halls are empty except for those few over achieving students who arrive early and patiently await their next class on a bench conveniently place on one side of hall.

The hallway serves its one purpose of a walkway between classrooms, but if you look deeper there’s more. It serves as a place to rest on a wooden bench or get a quick refreshment of water from the cold drink fountain. It’s also an informational pathway filled with flyers and poster recruiting students to join clubs or reminding about an up coming event. Also it severs as a meeting place for students before and after class where it becomes more of a social space where students and staff can express their thoughts and feeling throughout the day.

The space I'm thinking of is the Jordan Creek Mall. This mall is in the center of West Des Moines. You can see the elegance of the mall when you step inside it. The ceilings are so high it feels like you're in a church. The elegance of the floors and wall murals gives an effect of sophistication. The design of this mall affects the kind of customers the mall is looking for. They are looking for rich and fancy people so they designed a mall for them. I think this does affect people since the majority of the shoppers are more elegant than normal. I think the space shapes the people since they are more willing to spend more money in a nicer mall.

The DMACC materials labis used as a working space for materials testing, and the atmosphere reflects this well. The floor is cement, no tile or intricate designs. The reason for this is if anything you're testing is spilled dropped or broken it can be cleaned easily. There are shelving units all over the room with all sorts of equipment on them. This, of course goes along with the spac e being a working environment. There are electrical plugs hanging from the ceiling. Used for easy access to electricitywhen conducting experiments. Tables are set up in the center facing a dry erase board, for easy teaching of class. The westside of the room is where the lab stations are. Easily accessible by both student and teacher. Creating an environment of instruction and cooperative work. The floor of the lab stations are covered with a mat, so no one will slip, but also provides easy cleanup for spills. The lab itself is set away from most other classrooms. Reasoning behind this is the testing going on in there is sometimes loud. So, it was built that way to not disrupt other classes. The entire idea behind the design of the room is to create a working environment that is easy to learn.

The space I am analyzing is the basketball court at my high school. The bright lights glisten off the freshly waxed floor almost so much that you are blinded when you walk in. Black and gold banners fill the walls from all the accomplishments of our athletics. Bleachers with “Wapsie” written on them are up against the wall. The gym is very versatile. Basketball, volleyball, and wrestling all use the space for meets or games. The gym is very important to me because I played many of my volleyball and basketball games there. The nine rows of bleachers on each side of the gym are the main key to how the gym is used. Spectators fill the bleachers on both sides for every home event. I believe that both the space shapes the people and the people shape the space. The gym is set up for the people to watch competitive high school sports and is a great atmosphere to do it in. But if there are people to fill the gym there is not the element of excitement when a point is scored.

A space I always think about when a person asks where I would you like to live when you get out of college. I have always wanted to answer..in a tent. I think of the great outdoors as my home. My family and I are big in hunting and fishing along with living outside in a tent for the weekend. Always fresh air and no matter where you go you always run into new adventures. Everyone seems to use this space no matter what you may think such as just walking to class or exercising outside. Also I think people shape this space because we are in charge of something growing or not growing and cutting down the trees.

The space that is relativly new to me is the inside of my truck. I have had the truck just under a year now and have become very attached to it. Gray and black colors fill the interior. The inside is a very comfortable place. I spend quite a bit of time inside of my truck. The truck is pretty durable. It is easy to keep nice and clean whenever it gets dirty. The smell is always unique as well. It usually changes every day. Of course there is the radio and also CD's to listen to while inside. It can also be cold or warm depending on how you feel. I think I enjoy being inside and driving my truck so much because it is the first vehicle that I can call my own. A truck is something that I had always wanted, and when I finally bought one, I was very pleased. It has become one of my favorite places to be.

The space that I feel most comfortable in is my shop. There is a work bench where I can use to work on different items with a vise on one end. There are cupboards hanging on the wall with different kinds of tools inside. Besides the cupboards is an organizer in which I use to store several different kinds of bolts, nuts, and screws. And of course a shop wouldn’t be a shop without a tv, radio and a that good old recliner and couch. It is where my sons and I have a chance to get together and work on different items. Or at times it is where the guys gather, have a beer or two and play a few hands of poker. Steve

I think that some of the best spaces are those created by nature. One of my favorite places are the sand dunes of Australia. We drove out to them in these large four-wheel drive buses. It looked never ending. Up one hill, and down it. Then another appears. You can see nothing but the horizon in the background. No trees, no grass, just endless sand. The sun beats down on your skin, as if to say "Welcome to the outback." We arrive at our destination. I suppose we could have picked any number of hills, but this was the largest: 50 ft up. One may think, we were there to just observe and soak up the beauty of the desert. However, we had other things in mind. We all got out our flat boards and waxed the bottoms. We were going sand toboganing. We walked in a line up the hill. With each step, it felt as if the sand sank us back two. Our muscles were strained and tired until we reached the top. At this point you feel a sense of accomplishment. We sat up there and admired the beauty of the scenery. So quite and peacefull. Nothing moving but the few gusts of sand. Each stike of wind reshaping the sand, creating these dunes. Although nature shaped these dunes, we created our own use for them that nature hadn't intended. Suddenly it's my turn. I lie flat on the board upon the sand at the top of the hill. Looking down to my destination, I gripped the front pulled it slightly up. I push off with my feet and fly down the hill. I squint to keep the sand out of my eyes as I breeze toward the bottom and glide to a stop. One of the greatest adrenaline rushes ever came from something so simple.

I chose to analyze The Cafe because it is five blocks from my house and I enjoy it alot. I worked there for two and a half years but I decided to analyze the seating areas and suh rather than the kitchen because frankley the kitchen area does not have much to analyze. I chose this place because I know that I already like it and I thought it would be interesting to take some time to really look at why it is that I like it so much. I also chose it because it has so manu different and unique aspects to it and there are many different things about it that could be analyzed over all dasy.

The place I would like to analyze is my parent's house. This is where my entire family can come together on occassion to get away from the busy schedules that seem to contradict one another's. It is a place of wonderful smells, laughter, and love. The structure of the house helps with this too and I think it will be a good space to write about.
